Teacher’s Day

Today is Teacher’s Day, a celebration of our profession, but the appreciation began last week.

Primary students in the art classes drew pictures of their favorite teachers. You can see how Lord Herndon looks to them…

Friday night, there was a huge dinner and dance for all teachers living on this side of the city at their private restaurant on top of the hospital next to our school. It was a huge buffet, free drinks, and a live band and singer, and all of the royalty of our company was there. We are still getting used to some aspects of life here. One example would be teachers belly-dancing with their vice principals. We just couldn’t quite relax enough for that!

Yesterday, an emergency meeting was called in the English staff room, and our department head brought in chocolate cake and tea as a “thank you.”

Today, we see teachers stumble into the room, their arms laden with bouquets of flowers like Miss America.

Here’s the clincher: we thought it was a prank at first, but the general manager of our company had purchased gold coins for every teacher in every one of his schools and presented them to us in small porcelain boxes. It sounds a bit medieval to trade in gold coins, and they looked like small copper pennies. We put them into our bags quite casually until we were told they were worth about $135!

Happy Teacher’s Day!
