Happy Birthday, United States!

ladyherndon Home, Turkey

We celebrated our home country’s birthday with a day at the beach, some Fourth of July crafts, a barbecue-style dinner, and then sparklers. I think it’s hilarious that we watched a video of fireworks that we saw two years ago in Breckenridge, Colorado, since that was the closest we could come to the real thing.

If you see any color around Princess’ mouth, the answer is yes. She tried to eat her paintbrush.

Now I have to tell you the story of our red, white, and blue cheesecake. I wanted to use strawberries, bananas, and blueberries to decorate it. Well, strawberries are out of season now, and when they go out of season, it means you can’t find them anywhere. So we decided to use strawberry jam. Okay, no problem. But the bananas we had were brown, so we used sweet heavy cream instead. Alright, it’s a brighter white anyway.

Then, the blueberries.

Lord Herndon made a special trip to the store, but all he could find was a package of frozen blueberries. It was a rather hefty price at 18 Turkish lira, which is about $12. But he thought to himself, “Self? This is a special occasion when we are trying to celebrate a holiday. It’s worth it.” We really don’t buy many luxury food items any more, not even peanut butter. So he went ahead and splurged.

I defrosted them that day and we were ready to use them for the final touch. Then we had to make another special trip to get some corn on the cob (scatter-brained pregnant woman here), and while in the fresh produce section, what do you think we saw? Small packages of fresh blueberries for about 2 lira.

Oops.

Oh well, we made sure to savor each bite of our exquisitely expensive blueberries.
