Celebration of the Harvest

ladyherndon Colorado, Home

We are trying to keep the focus of Halloween on the harvest instead of blood, gore, and ghouls. We have celebrated pumpkins, learned about and made scarecrows, enjoyed the autumn leaves, and played dress up. I have made every effort to keep the kids away from the creepy side of this holiday.

We even got to go to Lord Herndon’s school and walk in their Costume Parade with his class. Lord Herndon was very dashing in his Phantom of the Opera costume. He even had his own soundtrack (MP3 player and speakers in his pockets!)

There are some traditional things we will do, however. One of them is trick-or-treating. But we will go out for only about an hour, then return to the house and spend the rest of the evening handing out candy and blessings to the kids who come to our door. We want to focus on the giving instead of the getting. We were practicing with Prince in the car today and he said, “I will go to the door and knock, and I will say ‘Trick or treat!’ and they will give me candy, and I will say ‘Thank you.'” (and Princess parrots “Teh doo!”)

That’s right, Little Prince. That is how you do it properly.

We had a theme this year. I like themes, don’t you?

Little Prince was … a Frog Prince. He will tell you he was a Frog King.

I guess my kisses don’t work because he’s still a frog.

Princess was … a Princess. Hey, we’re pretty literal people sometimes. I mean, the name of Prince’s stuffed puppy is, well, Puppy. So of course Princess had to be a Princess.

No, she didn’t fall under a spell after eating her apple. Whew!

Now tell me, can you think of a more princess-like pose than that?

She wanted her apple back.

So we have a Frog Prince and a Princess. I’ll bet you can tell me what Sweet Pea was.

Yup, a Pea in the Pod. Get it? The Princess and the Pea?

Hers was the simplest costume, and the only one I didn’t sew myself! Go figure.

Let’s see if I can do a theme again next year. The older two might actually have ideas of their own by then.

Happy Harvest, and Happy Halloween!
