Fancy Nancy, Hamburger Cookies, and “He Never Would Have Dated Me Then”

Valentine’s Day, 2012.

First of all, let me explain the title of this post, bit by bit.

Prince didn’t have a typical Kindergarten Valentine’s Day party at school, which I was thankful for. (I always think store-bought Valentine’s are such a waste!) They did exchange Valentine’s, but it was only a small part of their Fancy Nancy Party. Fancy Nancy is a book character who loves to dress up in as many different, and fancy, things as she can. She also loves to use fancy words. So the party involved lots of dress-up clothes, especially from parents’ closets!, and lots of big fancy words. Prince loved it, and especially loved his outfit.

For a special dessert that night, I made Hamburger Cookies. I saw the idea in a magazine and it was a lot of fun! The kids helped me through each step. First, you make peanut butter cookies and a pan of brownies.

I used a glass to cut the brownies into circles, so they looked like hamburger patties.

Then I used flat, sour green apple strips for lettuce and squeezable red frosting for ketchup. (I should have bought yellow too!)

I needed to use toothpicks to hold them together, but they were a big hit! The kids and Lord Herndon loved them, and I had enough left over to take them to the monthly Leadership Team meeting at church. Now I want to have a 50’s diner-themed dinner party and make them again!

All the kids wanted to share their love with you for Valentine’s Day.

And I have been contemplating for awhile what it would have been like to know Lord Herndon in school. Basically, he was a stud. He was involved in Youth Group, Track, and Band, and he was a beautiful specimen of teenage maleness. I put these pictures up and Princess said “Woo woo, Daddy!” See for yourself:

I, however, was a…dork. I really was. I had Coke-bottle glasses, braces, and straight A’s, and was involved in NJROTC and TaeKwon-Do. These pictures make me cringe.

So I like to ask Lord Herndon if he even would have noticed me in middle school and junior high. Of course, gentleman that he is, he always tells me he would have fallen in love with me then, just like he did when we met post-college.

Maybe that’s because I haven’t changed much? 🙂
