For the first time in forever, Mike and I were able to hike a 14er! Not just one, but two! And not just any 14er, but one that has eluded us for years!
The last time we hiked a mountain above 14,000 feet together was…before we moved overseas at least. So more than 8 years ago. It might have even been Grays Peak with my mom and uncle when Alex was in the carrier. Yikes! That’s a long time ago. That was one of the times I hiked Grays but didn’t make it over to Torreys. The other was with my high school friend Nick. So it was essential to me that we hike Torreys first this time, to make sure we bagged it, and then do the saddle over to Grays. For our good friends Elsie and Loren, they had tried to hike the Grays/Torreys combo as well but had to turn back due to lightning.
Four very happy people on top of Torreys! Nailed it!
Looking at the shapes left in an ancient glacier’s wake.
The view from the top of neighboring Grays Peak, with Torreys in the background. Hey, weren’t we just there a mere hour ago?
It was amazing to be hiking these elegant peaks again. Mike and I both wore our shirts with a map of Colorado and all of the 14ers we’ve hiked circled on the back. I couldn’t even remember all of the ones I’d done until I looked at my shirt. I did so many with Erin and Shannon during college and after, and Mike and I hiked regularly before we had Alex. It makes me excited both for the day we can hike them as a family, and for the day the kids can stay home on their own and we can hike more as a couple. They are addictive! Once you get up there, no matter how hard it was, you just want to do it again. Kind of like childbirth…
Let’s see pics of other 14ers I’ve done! The list (in no particular order) is Elbert, Pike’s Peak, Evans, Bierstadt, Quandry, Huron, Sneffels, Yale, Princeton, Democrat, Lincoln, Bross (& Cameron, though it is an unofficial 14er), Grays and now Torreys!
