2016-7-29 Mike Diving with a Broken Foot

Any man who can dive like this can surely still go rollerblading at Skate City with his wife for their 12-year anniversary and hike their last 14er of the season the following Saturday, right?

Ha ha! Nope. This is my husband divingĀ with a broken foot.

Yep, while riding a jet ski down at Pueblo Reservoir at the end-of-summer party for his lawn care job, he got bucked off but his foot decided to stay on, andĀ crunch went 3 of his toe joints and most of his arch. They determined that much at the urgent care, where he picked up a walking boot with an enclosed air cast. We borrowed some crutches from our pastor (who has five boys and I think may have gone through something like this once or twice) and Mike decided no broken bone(s) was going to keep him from going on the youth group mission trip to Nebraska that weekend. The fact that he couldn’t drive a manual made no difference to him, he just borrowed someone’s automatic and drove off into the sunset, leaving me chewing my bottom lip and wondering where we went wrong.

Many doctor appointments, xrays, an MRI, and one puzzle-piece-replacing surgery later, he is casted and sentenced to 6-8 weeks of non-weight-bearing existence, right at the start of his first year teaching PE. Cruel joke, no? But we’re dealing, as well as we can. It’s definitely nice to have him around, and he gets to see the kids a lot more than he ever did before. But without being able to do much of anything, it’s very hard for such an active man with an able, energetic mind to just sit on the couch with his foot up all day. Pinterest is getting a workout, but we’ve found other things for him to work on that are helping, like all of the paperwork and computer research that I would otherwise have had to do to help us start to get organized for moving overseas in a few years, as well as studying his new curriculum for when he does go back to school.

We were so blessed by our friends, the McRoberts, who gifted us with this scooter, which has helped tremendously and would have been out of our reach otherwise, especially since the surgery blasted all of our savings into kingdom come in one fell swoop.

I also have a companion on my many weekly errands, such as fabric shopping for my Etsy store at Joann’s!
