A Closer Look

We took the Metro for the first time today! We had to get down to Independence Square again to actually explore the churches, so we found our Metro stop, bought our tokens, and took the train. The kids were enthralled. Nothing like this exists in Colorado Springs!

We came up in the middle of Independence Square and reintroduced ourselves to the Lach Gates.

St. Sophia’s Cathedral came first. We paid for a full family ticket, which included all the grounds and museums, and climbed the Bell Tower. At every level, the view got better and better. It was breathtaking.

We explored every inch of the museums, refectories, and inside the cathedral itself. Many of the interiors had a no-photography rule, so you’ll just have to come visit us for a chance to see the glory of this incredible church!

We had to play at the park and have some ice cream on the way to St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery.

There was a service occurring in St. Michael’s when we arrived. We came prepared this time, and the girls and I wrapped scarves around our heads so we could enter and solemnly observe the beautiful ceremony. The opulent spiritual decor inside this church was just spectacular. I can’t even begin to describe the colorfully detailed paintings of apostles, Biblical stories and the heavenly realms. Again, no photography. Believe me when I say, we wandered from room to alcove to nave with our eyes open and our mouths closed in respectful appreciation.
