Lviv Cathedrals, Flaming Coffee, and Museum Arsenal

The third day of our road trip around Ukraine was spent in lovely Lviv. There were two churches we didn’t have a chance to see during our Spring Break trip here with Aunt Cynthia, so after breakfast at the hotel, we went there first.

The Church of St. Olha and Elizabeth was striking from the outside, especially with the autumn trees on the grounds, but was surprisingly fresh, white and unadorned on the inside.

We spent a long time at St. George’s Cathedral. It was stunning. We particularly enjoyed the gardens. Fall in Ukraine is so beautiful!

We also explored the Museum-Arsenal, which we had seen in the spring as well but didn’t get to check out.

Next, we returned to Lviv Coffee Manufacturers. We had explored there before, but somehow we totally missed the coffee “mine”!

There is the entrance to the coffee shop, which has the coffee roaster and beans available for purchase. Then there are two huge rooms of souvenirs, several different locations to sit and order food and drinks, a courtyard, and even an upstairs. But down these dark and narrow stairs, we found the “mine,” where they chisel coffee beans out of the walls and cart them out. We sat in the dark at a tiny table, wearing our protective hard hats, and ordered the Flaming Coffee (or Flaming Cocoas for the kids).

After lunch, we said good-bye to Lviv (or “until next time”) and headed to
Kamianets-Podilskyi. We arrived after sundown (again) and were awarded with the stunning sight of the castle, shining like a star in the darkness.
