Picnic on Heybeliada

ladyherndon Home, Turkey

Prince has been talking about taking Grandma M on a picnic for weeks, so today, that’s what we did. We packed a basket, loaded the kids, and took a ferry over to our favorite pick of the Prince’s Islands group, Heybeliada.

With steep streets lined alternately in flowering whitewashed houses and run-down condemnations, the village on Heybeliada looks like a cross between San Francisco and an abandoned mining town.

The only cars allowed on the island are service vehicles, so Grandma M and Uncle S enjoyed the sight of the horse-drawn carriages that regularly rode past us as we walked up the road.

We enjoyed our picnic in a small wooded area just outside the village.

It was sometime around then that Princess decided Uncle S was her new buddy.

For the rest of their stay, if Lord Herndon wasn’t around to pick her up or walk with her, she would always turn to Uncle S. (that is, until the last weekend of their trip when I devised a plan to get rid of the men for a few days so that Princess would turn to her grandma, but more on that later…)

Lord Herndon was not able to join us on our picnic because he was entrenched in the mandatory last week of meetings at the school, but he came home at the end of the day with some very good news:

His presence was no longer required!

He was free!

There was much rejoicing.
