The Eagerly Anticipated UCI Spring Fair

Prince is getting more and more interested in calendars and dates lately, and he really enjoys countdowns. We’ve been counting down to the visit of Grandma M and Uncle S, but Prince likes saying “2 more weeks!” more than “13 more days!” because 2 is smaller than 13.

Before that, we counted down to the Union Church of Istanbul Spring Fair, which took place on Saturday. He was so excited that he asked about it all week long. By the time we finally got there, all of us were hyped up!

We paid the fee for our entrance and then found ourselves surrounded by the international food tables. Another fee bought us 25 tokens, which I thought would be “just” enough to get us through some snacks and plenty of games. The garden stretches back long and thin, and it was packed with people from front to back. We thought we’d push through food tables, drink tables, games, second-hand sales, and much more.

Prince led us, skipping and pulling on our hands, all the way through the garden to the back. The food tables gave you two plates sagging with their heavy load, the drinks were only one token each, the second-hand sales were fun to look at but not a good idea for us in our “we might be moving soon” state, and there was only one game. You got four rockets for one token, and you always earn a prize no matter how well (or how badly) you throw.

Did you do the math? We all ate well, got a refreshing drink, and played the rocket game over and over, and still had more than enough tokens to do it all again five times. Lord Herndon tried to get rid of the tokens by asking if we could pay one every time Prince climbed the jungle gym, or if we could pay one for each rocket he threw, or if we could pay one for every time someone said how cute Princess was in her dress …

Oh well, I guess we overestimated the size of the fair, but we still made a generous contribution to the refugee fund.
