Ready to Read

To make sure that Prince doesn’t backslide too far after his year of preschool, and because he won’t be able to go this year (at least for awhile), I have started doing school with him as part of our daily routine. He loves the one-on-one attention from me during this time, and it’s wonderful to see him blossom. He is so ready to learn how to read! If he ever goes to the bathroom and doesn’t come out for awhile, we know it’s because he’s standing in there, pants and underwear down around his ankles, reading the letters on the back of the toilet. (seriously folks, this happens a lot!) I kept him entertained while riding the bus in Istanbul or standing in line at the check-in counter at Atatürk International Airport by having him count the letters in all of the signs around us. I handed him a “deck” of cards with different letters on them, and he pulled out the letters of his name immediately and arranged them in the correct order without any prompting. He actually slows me down in the grocery store more than the two girls because he wants to read the letters off every label of every item we see. This kid is ready ready ready, ready to read.

Our first unit was Apples.

We learned that when you slice an apple in half vertically, it makes a shape like a heart. When you slice it horizontally, you can see a star.

We did a science experiment with dyed whipped cream, where we discovered that primary colors mixed to form secondary colors. What a sweet lesson!

We practiced spelling, counting apples, and what color is on the inside compared to the outside.

I filmed his final exam for your viewing pleasure.

After much review, he was able to answer my basic questions whenever I popped them.

As a celebration, we took a field trip down to Ferrara’s Happy Apple Farm south of Colorado Springs. It was a wonderful lesson in economics, farming, and healthy living. Plus, it was just fun to ride the tractor around and munch on fresh apples!

In case you didn’t notice, Princess has made sure that she was involved in all of Prince’s school activities. She got sweet rewards from the science experiment, took her job as Official Apple Taster very seriously while on the field trip, and even learned something herself:

When you poke an anthill, your parents freak out. Oh, and the little ants climb all over you, too.
