Fire Fighters

Prince had the last part of this week off because of Parent/Teacher Conferences, so I made the most of it by doing an entire Fire Fighter Day. After all, learning doesn’t stop just because school does.

We had already done a unit on these heroes when I was teaching him preschool, but I wanted to include some field trips this time. So we visited the Fire Fighter Museum, full of antique fire engines and a friendly old retired fighter who let the kids clamber all over the trucks and carriages, peer into the hoses, and type on the message machines. The friendly fighters there also gave the kids a sticker and a candy, and I bought them the plastic helmets. Then they recommended that I take the kids to a real fire station at any time and ask for a tour, so I did.

At the modern fire station, we were shown around by an ex-teacher-turned-fire fighter, who not only gave thrilling explanations of the truck, equipment, and lodgings to the kids, but also gave me incredible insights into the life and drama of the fighters, and the connection they have with their local community. It was an amazing afternoon and, as always, I only wished that Lord Herndon could have joined us.

After Quiet Time, I guided the kids in a fire fighter reenactment.

Princess was in charge of putting the fire out in the house, after making sure it was clear:

Prince drove the fire truck and was in charge of cleaning up the station and the truck afterwards:

Sweet Pea preferred the “smother” method and used sand and dirt to put out any smoldering coals:
