On to Space Week!

We started with the Space Odyssey exhibit in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Every time we go, we try a new exhibit, so the museum always feels new.

Below is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a museum. They had this area behind the glass set up as if it were Mars, and the astronaut had a lot of different instruments and scientific experiments that she was explaining. The man in the lower right hand corner of the picture had a microphone and was pretending it was 2046 and he was talking to the astronaut through a com-link, and anyone in the audience could ask her questions about Mars. She would keep working on her experiments and studies while she answered.

She was showing the kids a tomato plant that they were trying to grow from Mars soil, to see if it would sustain life. After about half an hour, she said her oxygen tank was low and she’d have to return to the station but would come back when she could. How cool is that?! The kids were absolutely enthralled. I couldn’t get them to look at anything else until she had left.

We tried space ice cream for the first time. Interesting! It definitely tasted like ice cream, but was powdery and strange.
