Let me start off by saying that I had no idea there was so much tension surrounding this question. I mean, people get mad about this! What’s the big deal, you ask?
Apparently, these two very different-looking cookies are made with some similar ingredients and share a very similar name.
When Evelyn got her Grace doll and Mike and I started learning more about her story, we thought how cute the little colorful Parisian cookies are that come in her accessories (even though we haven’t bought them yet). These cookies are the popular French macarons. So on one date night, we went to Kneaders, a fun little bakery, and asked them for a “macaroon,” so we could try one out. Little did we know that such a small mispronunciation would land you with such a different cookie. Now, I don’t mind the super-sweet coconut mound that is a macaroon, but they are almost too sweet for me and definitely not pretty enough to store in a little box and give as a gift. This is when I started reading about the debate about the two cookies, and also the big issue surrounding what makes a perfect macaron and how to do it.
I got tired just reading about how to make them perfect, so I knew when we picked France Week that we’d have to find some to try, and we did! We went to Chef Sugar and each kid picked out a different colored cookie.
We also swapped around so everyone could have a taste. Theo picked the Peach Mimosa Champagne (because it was orange), Penny picked Lemon, Evelyn picked Lavender Vanilla Bean, and Alex picked Coconut.
Since the filling is basically straight frosting, these were also too sweet for me, but man are they pretty!
I also surprised them tonight with Grace’s movie, which showed plenty of scenes of Paris and macarons to fit our theme perfectly!
