On July Fourth, we were so happy to go to a few museums with Daddy for once! First, we went to the National Museum of WWII Aviation. This was one place I would say costs more than its worth, since there was really only one hangar to see, unless you take the 2-hour guided tour which was not well suited for young ones. Still, what we did see was pretty neat.
The kids all took a turn in this really cool plane that had the different parts painted color-coded to the instruments that move them. They use it to teach the mechanics of flight to students. It was fun for each kid to sit in the pilot’s seat and go on their first “flight.”
There were displays filled with memorabilia from Japanese pilots, the Tuskegee Airmen, German forces, and of course American pilots.
The propaganda posters cracked me up.
Here’s one I read about Alice the Riveter (paraphrased): Alice knows why she works hard every day, making airplanes. She’s thinking about Edward and how he looked in his uniform when he left, and the life they want to have together. She’s not going to let Adolf take that away from her. This is her war. It’s Edward’s. It’s all of ours. But it certainly won’t be Adolf’s!
So let’s all drive our cars slower to conserve gas, use less sugar and flour in our cooking, and invest in war bonds. We can all do our part to support the war effort. Just like Edward. Just like Alice.
I think the messages today are a bit different. A little more to the point.
