It’s that time again! Time to choose a theme for each week of summer and give our activities a focus.
This summer, we chose countries. I like this one because we can tie in different things, like library books, crafts, new restaurants and recipes to try, art to research, new music to listen to, etc. While we may not have as many local attractions to visit that would match our themes, it’s still fun to “travel the world” this way. Our entire family has a wanderlust that will not be satisfied, and this is the closest we can come to actual globe-trotting until that glorious day when we can move overseas again!
Our first country was Brazil. We visited our local Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and did an Amazon Animal Scavenger Hunt, made the Brazilian dessert brigadeiro, listened to samba music, had a soccer match, learned about amethyst mines and the local carnaval festival held each year. We watched themed movies, Fern Gully (set in the Australian rain forest, but still!)
The kids also attended the Vacation Bible Blast at Vanguard Church this week. They always have the best themes! We’ve gone to a Frozen VBB, and a Minion one. We’ve also heard about a Narnian one and a Harry Potter one. This year, the theme was The Good Dinosaur, with the motto being Make Your Mark. My kids loved it, as always.
We also started our own little passports for the summer, which I will show in a future post. The kids are writing or drawing their favorite part of each country week, and I ordered country flag stickers to put in for each place we “visit.”
Tchau, Brazil!
