Paint Mines Interpretive Park

ladyherndon Colorado, Home

Today was the first really warm, sunny day of the year, so I couldn’t wait to get outside for a hike. We packed the kids up, along with some friends, and drove out past Calhan to Paint Mines Interpretive Park. We haven’t been here in years, not since this trip in 2011, and in the interest of seeing all the best of Colorado before we move, it was definitely on the list. Paint Mines is also on a list of 12 of the World’s Most Colorful Natural Wonders!

The hike started with collecting caterpillars so Theo and Penny could “scientist” them.

It should be noted that the test subjects did not survive.

Then, quite suddenly after a mostly gentle walk, the incredible rock formations appeared.

And, just as suddenly, your kids (and their friends!) disappear!

I literally looked up after taking a drink and all six kids were gone, clambering up the spires and hoodoos, splashing in the white mud, and standing far too close to the edge of sheer drop-offs.

It should be noted that all six kids we were responsible for did survive.

Evelyn brought one of her best friends, Josh. He is such a sweetheart and I would absolutely approve of a future relationship between the two of them. 🙂

Not only did he let Evelyn fall asleep on his shoulder on the drive home, but he also helped keep Theo safe during all of the death-defying climbing that went on.

Don’t let Mike’s full cold-weather outfit fool you. It really was a very warm, sunny day!

This park is truly incredible.

My sweet boy.

And his best friend, Connor.

Colorado, we love you in all of your stark, dramatic beauty.
