Happy 13th Birthday, Alex!

I can’t believe I’m typing this, but our Alex turned 13 today! Aside from some smaller gifts that the kids picked out and the phone (ultimate!) that we are picking up next weekend, the biggest surprise ever was a dog.

We took the kids north to an animal shelter that our school supports, and didn’t say a word about where we were driving or why. When we pulled up to the gate, the kids noticed the dogs and cats on the sign. I raised my eyebrows and turned to look at them, and then the squealing began.

We wandered through the shelter for several hours, meeting dogs and learning more about them and which ones would be suitable for our family. There was a volunteer who was incredibly helpful in translating for us who also helped steer us toward a younger dog (so that it would grow up knowing the love of a family and how to handle children) but not quite a puppy (to avoid the teething and toileting phases).

Then we met Jenna, and she stole our hearts.

Alex named her after we decided she was the dog for us. She’s named for the character from the Septimus Heap novels,  which all the kids love to read.

Isn’t she sweet?

We have this week to buy everything we need for her, while the shelter has a vet look her over and sterilize her for us. We plan to bring her home on Saturday.

Welcome to the Herndon family, Jenna!
