Up, Up … But Not Away

Labor Day dawned early for us, so it’s a good thing we had managed to get some shower curtains. Seriously, I am regretting getting rid of those mundane things before we moved overseas. It seems ridiculous to have to buy them all over again! And do I remember them all in one trip? Of course not. The kids have been to Target more times in the past few days than in their entire lives, Prince included.

Lord Herndon took the older kids in their pajamas to go see the Colorado Balloon Classic, one of two field trips for Prince’s Transportation unit. The weather turned windy so the balloons weren’t able to take off, but just watching them inflate was fun for them. You can see in Prince’s pictures that he was captivated, and he has talked about them ever since. After dinner when Princess has gone to bed, we give Prince about half an hour of our undivided attention, and he is so excited to be able to tell us his stories and have us actually listen to him that he dances around in front of us, saying the same thing over and over, beside himself with joy.

Here is what he saw that morning:

All of the pictures were taken by Prince with absolutely no help. Isn’t he becoming quite an amazing photographer?

Now see where he is learning it from: his Daddy.

Meanwhile, Sweet Pea and I journeyed to Allenspark to watch my dear college friend Kim get married to an awesome guy named Pete. The sun was shining while we sat in the beautiful mountain meadow, huddled down to shelter from the stinging, icy, gale-force wind that blew Kim’s veil away and brought tears to all of our eyes. During the reception, while we watched the glowing bride and grinning groom dance together for the first time as husband and wife, we stole glances out the window at the smoke from two forest fires that were closing in from either side.

It was one of the most memorable weddings I have ever been to! I was so thankful for Kim and Pete’s attitudes about the whole thing. They dealt with each surprise with a smile on their faces, just happy, in the end, to be married.

(no pictures because the camera was being used for balloons)
