All Girl, All the Time … Mostly

We nicknamed her Princess for a reason.

She’s sweet as sugar. I said to her once, “Come on, Sweetie Pie.”

She replied, “I not Sweet Pie. I am Pumpkin Pie!”

And I just had to kiss her.

She adores this new toy that a friend from church gave us after her daughter had outgrown it. Princess named her “Bella” and she has snap-on outfits.

Princess is not all bows and unicorns and snap-on outfits, though. She has a tough side. She’s got sass.

Oh man, does she have sass.

Who says you have to have the zipper in the front? I can get dressed however I want! And underwear is totally optional.

And she can keep up with the boys. We were over at our friends’ house for dinner the other night, and they have three sons. The middle one, Wesley, who is Prince’s little buddy, voiced his concerns during the meal:

“We don’t have any girl toys for [Princess] to play with!”

I locked eyes with Lord Herndon and we hid our grins. “Well,” I said to Wesley very seriously, “do you have any cars?”

“Yes,” he said, nodding. “Lots of cars.”

“Oh good! She loves playing with cars. Do you have any trains?”

“Yes. We have Thomas.”

“Wonderful! She’s really good at playing trains. Do you have any Legos?”

“Oh yes!”

“Great! Now tell me, do you have … any Woody or Buzz Lightyear dolls?”

“Yeah!”

“Wow! You are her new best friend.”

And off they went, Princess chasing her three friends and her brother up the stairs to the “Boys Only” play room.

We heard lots of giggling, and then later, Princess comes soaring down the stairs with Buzz in one arm and Woody in the other. She played with them all night long, just like she played with them at our other friends’ house last week. Thankfully, she leaves them without a fit at the end of the night.

It’s still strange to me how she became so fixated on them. We don’t have a TV so she doesn’t see any ads for Toy Story paraphernalia. We have only the original Toy Story, and we can’t even watch it now because it is a Region 2 DVD (the US is Region 1). And we had to walk out of Toy Story 3 in the theater! So how did she develop this deep and abiding love for the characters? How did she come to set her heart on Woody and Buzz “Ligh-dere”?

In fact, whenever we see someone new, she walks up to to them and asks, “What’s you gonna be?”

This comes from a dinner table conversation starter when I asked her, “If you could be anybody from Toy Story, who would you be?”

Princess is always Woody, Prince is Buzz, Sweet Pea is Jessie, I am Bullseye, and Lord Herndon is Mr. Potato Head. (These were Princess’ choices, you understand.)

So she wants to find out who everyone else is going to be, and if she doesn’t approve of their choice, she declares that they are Slinky or Bo Peep or Rex instead.

She has proclaimed her affection for Toy Story so loudly that my friend Carrie even thought of her when there was an amazing sale on Toy Story pajamas. Never mind that they are boys’ pajamas.

“To infinity – and beyond!”
