Well I’ve been offline for almost two weeks now, due to our paydays falling on weird weeks and a long stretch of time between, which means we haven’t been able to pay our phone or internet bill! So I’m catching up a bit here at the gym with their free wi-fi.
I went to Breckenridge last weekend for a sewing/ladies’ retreat with Beth, Kelli (my pastor’s wife and friend), and Beth’s friend Melea. Kelli knew she was traveling with three seamstresses but she said she would enjoy the quiet and time with friends, and I hope she did. The weather was absolutely beautiful in Breckenridge and we did get out and enjoy it. I didn’t have the same “must sew now” attitude as I had last year, or even on the two weekends I spent sewing with my mom in Castle Rock, so it was more leisurely for me. But I did finish a dress and a striped top. My dress is New Look 6497 and it’s lovely!
I used this floral stretch crepe from Joann, another purchase from my #BuyAllTheFloralFabric shopping trip a few months ago. The lining is from my Grandma’s Stash but I only lined the bodice. I cut and sewed the size 12 with no modifications needed. I did add pockets because … pockets. If one can have them, one should have them. That’s my motto.
They were a bit tricky to add with the side invisible zipper, but I had done the same technique on my pink skirt so I knew what to do.
The bodice has princess seams and a front inset that would be fun to add detail to on another iteration. What I particularly liked was the lace-up back. I ordered these gorgeous rose gold D-rings from BuckleGuy.com. I will need to find a backless bra solution but for now, I wear my nude colored bra and hope it blends enough.
The length was perfect with a narrow hem. I really like how full the skirt is, with the pleats created from pieces and seams rather than just folds, even though all those pieces were annoying to cut out in this direction fabric! The material feels amazing to wear: it’s almost spongey and thick, yet swishy and airy too. Hard to explain but wonderful to wear!
So this happy little dress is a winner, and I’m saving the pattern to use again someday soon. I think it’d be fun in a fancy fabric using some of the inset variations. Gotta love New Look patterns; I have definitely found some winners in that humble little section.
