Here is a dress that I am not too sure about.
I like the combination of colors and patterns. I would never have thought to combine polka dots and a floral in this way. I like the black piping, and the black belt. I really like the colors in the skirt fabric that I found, not only because it so closely resembles the inspiration dress, but also because I can wear it with a blue, black, or yellow cardigan and still feel put-together.
I didn’t want to risk the dress being too low-cut, so I opted for a straight bodice instead of the sweetheart neckline. I wanted to keep my options open with the black belt, so rather than sewing it on as a permanent part of the dress, I designed my own black removable belt out of pleather. I had no idea pleather was so fun. It has some stretch, which I both like and dislike, and it sticks sometimes in the machine, but I like the look and feel of it, and how easy it was to make a belt with a fun bow on it that I can wear with other dresses.
I don’t like how this dress makes me look. Instead of cute, flirty, and fun, I think it makes me look bigger than I am, or at least doesn’t help by slimming me down. I also think this particular pattern flattens my chest, even though the bodice is not that tight. I will have to try it out with some cardigans and see if that helps.
I think I need to figure out some better poses, too. 🙂
P.S. Can I just say a word of thanks here to my ever-helpful, supportive, constructively critical and omni-encouraging husband? The man who stops what he’s doing at random moments to comment on my fabric choices or my half-sewn projects. He who endlessly zips and unzips me, pins and unpins me, and photographs the completed look. What an amazing man I have.
