My Re-Creation #2 is inspired by the fashion of Mary Margaret Blanchard, who is the real world persona of Snow White from ABC’s Once Upon a Time. ***Warning!*** This show is highly addictive!
Mary Margaret wears a blue dress like this in the first episode, where she meets Emma, her grown daughter. Because of a curse on all fairy tale characters, they are forced to live in a small town called Storybrooke as normal people with no memory of their previous lives (or previous loves!), and with no escape since time has stopped there and no one ages or changes. Emma, the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, was sent to our world before the curse was enacted, so she escaped its effects and was able to age normally. She is “The Savior” and is brought back to Storybrooke by her son, Henry, to break the curse and defeat the Evil Queen, Regina, who is the mayor and Henry’s adopted mother. Sound confusing? Just start with Season 1 Episode 1 and see how long you last. I have a whole circle of friends and family who join me in theorizing and analyzing each episode, as the layers of story and intrigue get deeper and deeper. I did warn you: it is addictive. See if you don’t start drinking your hot chocolate with cinnamon on the whipped cream.
Anyway, I love Mary Margaret’s style. She is a fourth grade teacher, and wears the cutest dresses and skirts. She looks innocent, beautiful, and also appealing. As a mother of 4, I am definitely not going for “sexy.” So I find Mary Margaret’s look very applicable.
Her actual dress is the Mompos Dress from Anthropologie ($120.00), but it was pretty easy to make a similar one. I found the blue fabric during Joann’s 50% off Red Tag clearance fabric sale; I think it is lawn. It is soft, drapey, and semi-sheer, so I lined the entire dress in light blue broadcloth. The pleating on this pattern is kind of annoying, but other than that, and the fact that I think it should be 2-3 inches longer, I like the result. I wear it with tights, boots, and a cardigan right now, but it will make a lovely spring/summer dress with a white belt and flats. What do you think?
My pictures will get better, I promise. They always get taken right when we are headed out the door somewhere, and I don’t take as much time as I should to Photoshop them better.
