This was supposed to be my holiday party dress, but I didn’t get it done in time. It’s probably just as well, since Lord Herndon and I seem to be the only ones at our church who like to dress up. 🙁
I tried out one of the fashion trends that I have noticed lately: the lace overlay. I made two views from Butterick 4443 and layered them on top of each other. I also used taffeta for a dress for myself, which I have only used for the girls before. The underdress is technically strapless, which I have previously forsworn, but it stays up well on its own, even before it was attached to the overdress at the zipper. I used double-folded bias tape to edge the neckline and arm holes of the overdress, and found some leftover black lace from one of my Etsy costumes to put on the hem of the underdress. I also made a taffeta belt with an attached bow to add a bit more color to the dress, since the black lace overlay was more opaque than I expected.
Final result: I love it! I think it is very flattering, I love the length and the retro feel, and I think it turned out very pretty. I can’t wait to wear it on a date with Lord Herndon, and I already have plans to wear it when my sons take me out for Valentine’s Day (while Lord Herndon is at the Daddy/Daughter Dance at our local gym!).
