I have been wanting to make this dress for Penny for awhile, and finally got it finished the night before Easter! I wish I had remembered that the pattern runs a little big, because I made it for Evelyn too and, while I usually sew kid clothes just slightly bigger so they can wear them for awhile, this pattern is too big in the bodice and gaps around her chest. But since I also sewed it tea-length, I can imagine she’ll wear it for over a year.
I love the newest American Girl doll, Maryellen, and I absolutely loved her birthday dress. It’s in the most beautiful shade of retro green: not teal, not green, but a lovely combination. Penny saved up and bought the dress awhile ago, so it was fate that I found a silky fabric in my Grandma’s collection that was similar. Then I found a crepe de chine (I think) and matching tulle to do a similar, but not exact, design for Penny so she could match her doll.
Here are the two girls for Easter! Evelyn is wearing her birthday dress (and also Daddy Daughter Dance) made from the same pattern.
