I’m finally feeling better after a 4 day head cold, so I took advantage of my renewed energy to make myself a quick basic black shirt last night using Simplicity 1280. I actually used this black fabric from my Grandma’s Stash (perhaps it is crepe de chine?) as a lining on a dress I also recently finished (I know, I know, another dress) and as I was working with it, I realized how well it would work for a shirt. This one didn’t take me long at all, though I had to fiddle with the crossover part and I’m still not convinced it lays flat.
I sewed the size Small (10-12) because that’s the size I normally sew for shirts, but it’s a bit tight across the shoulders. I also recently tore the seams out of the shoulders of another shirt I sewed in a size 10 (Simplicity 1779), so I’m wondering if next time I should taper the patterns up a size at the shoulder area.
This one is fun to wear, with loose elastic at the elbows and waist. And very funny for me to admit but I actually didn’t have a plain black shirt until now!
Happy sewing!
