Wow Are You? Sheath Dress in Copper Brocade (McCall’s 7318)

Hello lovelies! Happy New Year!

This is my contribution to the new year, a simple sheath dress made fabulous by the fabric I used. It’s a gorgeous Brocade Fabric-Paisley Gold Blush from Joann that I grabbed the same time as the burgundy for this dress, trying to increase my subtotal to use an amazing coupon. I knew I wanted to use it to make a sheath dress and just needed to find a simple pattern to do it with, so McCall’s 7318 worked perfectly.

And since Evelyn received several fashion designer books, a sketch book, and an array of colored pencils, we’ve been enjoying many coloring sessions together and I’m starting to have fun sketching my designs before actually sewing them.

I cut the size 12 since I wanted this dress to fit well, but not be too va-va-voom! It is a bit loose as a result, which is fine and just what I wanted. It’s a little shorter than I normally go for so that makes up for it!

Everything went together very smoothly. I took an extra 5/8″ from both shoulder seams because I think I have a shorter-than-average torso. As I look at some of my earlier dresses and the way they fit, I can pinch a good inch off each shoulder seam and they would have fit so much better. Sew and learn I guess!

I also could have lowered the bust darts on this dress but I don’t mind over much.

And here is my rose-gold dress with my new rose-gold heels from Modcloth! They were a Christmas gift from Mike, and bought at an amazing deal too. I think they are the highest shoes I own, but I feel solid in them because of how thick the heel is. They make my whole outfit suddenly date-worthy!

I fully lined the dress in a perfect nude lining fabric that I found in my Grandma’s Stash. I think there was 10 yards of it so I’m sure I’ll use it again.

I think I may need to sew a coordinating coat out of this sweet pink velvet that I have in my Grandma’s Stash, maybe either like this one:

My goals for 2017 are:

  • sew several coats/jackets
  • use more tailoring techniques
  • sew more practical, daily wear pieces
  • sew jeans
  • take better photos
  • be happy with myself and the way I look

May your 2017 bring you all sorts of new blessings, adventures, and happiness!
