I completed another one of my 12 sewing goals for 2017! I knew I wanted to make a two-piece dress ever since I saw this one:
She adapted a dress pattern into the skirt and a different dress pattern into the top. I loved how it looked like a dress, but with that inch of midriff showing in between. Luckily for me, I had a pattern that already had the perfect design for a two-piece dress like this: Simplicity 1099!
This stretch twill from Joann is so beautiful and comfortable, with a wonderful weight and drape and vivid colors. I love it so much!
I have been working so hard since I delivered my fourth and final baby 4.5 years ago, and I feel like I’m almost in the best shape of my life, or at least since college (when I ran a marathon). So I felt pretty brave to wear it and hope that I wasn’t bulging out anywhere. I’m a little self-conscious about the back so I wore a cardigan with it to church, but hopefully as the summer goes on that will get better and I will just rock it!
The bustier was fun and very easy to make, with a separating zipper on one side. I need to insert a hook-and-eye on the top because it actually worked itself down a bit during church, which I didn’t think about. It is lined with a light blue lining from my Grandma’s Stash. I like how the straps cross in the back. I sewed a size 12 because the skirt waistband was exactly my size, but I had to take in the princess seams on the bustier quite a bit so I should have done a size 10 on the top.
I love the vintage vibe! All in all, super happy with my dress.
