I absolutely LOVED this year’s YMCA Daddy/Daughter Dance theme: Sock Hop!
Poodle skirts, folks. You bet I was all over that. Yes, I made them the Day Of. But look how amazingly cute they are! So I still made them happen.
It was kind of fun to research the origins of poodle skirts! I found a lot of information here and here that were interesting and really showed me just how diverse this little ’50s skirt can be.
I let the girls pick out their skirt decor, and I found suitable fabric in my Grandma’s Stash. Evelyn’s is some kind of navy polyester, and Penny’s is from the remnant of this mystery black fabric that I had previously used for this skirt.
I used McCall’s 6238, which I had in my stash and have used for some of my Etsy patterns. I just used the skirt pattern pieces and added a self-drafted wide waistband. Penny’s waist measurement was 23″ and Evelyn’s was 23.5″, so I really just made the skirts identical. Evelyn’s ended up a wee bit shorter than traditional poodle skirts, but again, I literally started her skirt at 3:00 and she was zipping it up at 5:00.
I was glad to find a pretty traditional poodle for Penny, because that’s really what she wanted. Evelyn “branched” out a bit and picked these two little birds, and some green lace trim to look like leafy boughs on a tree.
(Iron your projects better before the pictures, Sarah! Sheesh)
Everything else in their fantastic outfits we already had.
They even let me add winged eyeliner and a pop of red lipstick. I mean, I truly have some fashionable, incredibly beautiful girls.
And here’s the stud who took them out on the town for their date!
