Being on Instagram means I’m invited to participate in a lot of daily-photo sewing challenges. I’ve done several by now (and my favorite is Me Made May because it’s the easiest to follow!) but I have found that they get repetitive. There’s only so many times I feel like posting my preference between stripes and polka dots. So I’ve decided to give myself my own sewing challenge: make all of the designs in one Vogue wardrobe pattern and have them all coordinate with each other.
I only have one Vogue wardrobe pattern, which is Vogue 2988.
It’s out of print and I’ve had it for a long time, so it was both the inspiration and the end goal for this challenge! I have several others that I’d like to get so hopefully I can do this again, because these patterns are neat. They usually include some kind of dress, a skirt, slacks, a shirt, and a jacket. That’s a lot of different designs for one Vogue pattern!
My first make of this self-made challenge was actually the pants, but I was able to get photographs of the skirt (my second creation) first so that’s what I’ll blog as #1.
Part of the fun of this challenge is seeing how much of my Grandma’s fabric I can use, without having to buy any. I had this perfect navy crepe for the slacks and skirt. Crepe is so nice. It’s sturdy but flowy, creases and sews well, doesn’t wrinkle easily, and doesn’t get too static-y. It also doesn’t need a lining!
I’m not sure why but the skirt had different finished garment measurements than the slacks, enough so that I felt like I had to make a size 12 skirt so it wouldn’t be too tight around my waist and hips. I sewed the slacks in a size 10 and they fit absolutely perfectly. Well, it turns out that I have a bit too much room in the waist of the skirt after all, so if I use the pattern again I’ll make a note to size down.
This skirt is very flirty with the kick pleat in the front and big flares out of each princess-seamed piece. It had an easy facing, narrow hem, and invisible zipper. It was quite easy to make. And it’s very twirly!
I wore this to work today and it was a bit too windy to safely wear such a twirly skirt. I had to hold it down for modesty when I walked the kids to school and picked them up in the afternoon!
Tomorrow I hope to talk about the slacks. And I’ve got the jacket already cut out of navy wool. The dress will be a white and navy diamond print woven, and I’m thinking a white satin for the shirt. It’s fun to make sure all the pieces coordinate, and in the end I’ll have a little mini capsule wardrobe, and I’ll have gotten more than my money’s worth out of that Vogue pattern.
