How to Deal Top in Nautical (McCall’s 6282)

I’m making quite the interesting face in this picture!

Here is another part of my navy collection, but this is actually a shirt I had made last year. At first when I got McCall’s 6282, I thought I would like the ruching on the sides and back seams. I thought it would be flattering. Instead, when I finished it, it was just too much. Too bulky or something, I can’t explain it well, but I didn’t like it at all. So I threw it in my mending pile and promptly forgot about it.

Since we’re moving overseas in less than 50 days (!), I have been working through my piles to get myself organized, and I pulled this top out again to make it wearable.

Basically, I just took out the hem, removed the elastic ruching from the two side seams and the back seam, then cut the excess length off so that the striped fabric would match the lining. Then I re-hemmed it and the next step was falling in love with it!

Here’s how it looked before:

And here’s how it looks now:

The striped knit is from Hobby Lobby a long time ago, and it’s very soft and comfortable. The lining does make it more substantial but I know I can wear it year-round.

Happiness is making clothes that I love.
