Today is a two-for-one! I was very good and made sure to wear a handmade item of clothing all day, even though I knew I’d be changing in the afternoon for my first ever … Kentucky Derby party!
Here I am for all the errands, mothering, disciplining, cleaning, prepping, etc. I had to do today, wearing my black Drape Front tank top from several years ago. Penny helped me take the pics, so they’re just a bit shaky.
After finishing all of that, I was finally able to get ready for my friend Beth’s Kentucky Derby party, which we were of course late for. But so fun to have a reason to decorate big, ostentatious hats and wear my Lacy Duchess Dress again!
The girls and I had so much fun decorating our Derby hats. Beth helped me find my hat at TJ Maxx for $12.99, and I bought the flowers, feather, ribbons and branches at Michael’s and Jo-anns. I wasn’t sure how to make it happen, but I knew which Derby hats I liked on Etsy, so I just started adding things and ended up with quite a fantastic hat! I like the way the weight of the flowers makes one side dip down. And I certainly saved money from the ones I was favoriting on Etsy!
The girls’ hats were from the dollar store. I let them arrange everything and then I glued it. Evelyn’s has a bird perched on a branch behind her blue poof, and Penny has pink butterflies.
Even though we were late, the party was so fun, with authentic Kentucky food and the most thrilling two minutes of sports ever! I love horses and I’ve been to one small horse race in my tiny hometown of Montrose, but that’s the closest I’ve come to watching a real horse race. It was very exciting! I have to say, going to the Kentucky Derby in person is now on my bucket list!
After Mike finished taking his Place test for teaching P.E. next year, and drove back from Boulder, he came to the party. I swear we look like the parents of the groom at a wedding!
