Vogue View Shirt Dress in Blush Houndstooth (Butterick 6090)

I am having so much fun recreating designs from Pinterest inspiration pics! Sometimes I have a near-exact reproduction, and sometimes it’s more of a general idea. This one is a general “pink short-sleeved shirt dress” idea.

Julia Engel of Gal Meets Glam and Jessica Day from the show New Girl are wearing the same pink gingham shirt dress, I think, which inspired my version.

I used this pink houndstooth woven fabric from my Grandma’s Stash. I think it may be cotton sateen but, as with most of the fabric I inherited, I can’t be sure. And Butterick 6090 was a slight variation but I liked the gathered bodice yoke so I went with it. It’s only the second shirt dress I’ve ever made, and the first time I covered my own buttons!

Covering the buttons was super fun, but I did learn something. After I washed it once and put the dress on, one cover came off and I had to glue it back on. Now I’ll remove that button and pound it in again before sewing it back on, for I’ll remember to add a drop of glue inside the buttons from now on.

I had originally planned to take these pics here at the Holy Cross Abbey in Cañon City with a bunch of girlfriends, but no one could come except one and she later had to cancel, so I asked Mike to recreate my image for the picnic with our own family. He did an amazing job and we had a wonderful time!

This place is so beautiful and an amazing backdrop for pictures. Such a nice change from my usual wooden fence!

For this pattern, going by the finishd garment measurements I cut a size 10 and graded it out to a size 12 at the waist. It fits perfectly with a more relaxed ease, since it is a shirt dress and therefore more casual.

I also relied heavily on the help of Lousie. Doesn’t she look lovely?

I used Louise to check where the waistline would land, how the back would lay, how the bust and shoulders would fit, and how long it would be. This is the ultimate birthday gift for me and I’m so so grateful to Mike for buying it for me!
