Alex’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Aang Costume (Simplicity 3997, McCall’s 5446, and Burda 9475)

Alex asked to be Aang from theĀ Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon series very early this year, and I agreed on the sole condition that he would regrow his hair by Christmas. Still, it was quite a shock to actually buzz his hair so short!

Still, I am so so so pleased with the final look. I think he looks amazingly like Aang!

I used the pirate shirt from McCall’s 5446, graded to a children’s size 12, and I rounded the collar and put a hook & eye at the neck so it would stay closed. I also used the slimmer sleeves and extended them by 3″ so they would be long enough without the cuffs. I made my own elbow and wrist bands with strips of fabric encasing elastic. I also self-drafted the belt and used Velcro.

The knee-length pants were from Simplicity 3997, which are the same I used for Aladdin’s pants in my store.

The cape is from Burda 9475 View C, size 10, but I extended the front pieces by 6″ so it would more completely close in the front.

Mike had the brilliant idea to have him sit on our blue ball to look like he was riding his “airball”! I loved it!

Alex loved it when people recognized him. I also made his BFF Connor a Prince Zuko costume. So, all in all, a very successful Halloween!
