This was the fourth project that I brought to my sewing retreat last weekend. I love this blue striped fabric from my Grandmas’s Stash, it’s completely reversible (so the tie ends look nice) and is so comfy and drapey.
I cut the size Medium and it fits perfectly. In shirts, at least in this pattern, I don’t mind the boxy shape. And I like how the gathers are concentrated on the shoulders and it’s relatively smooth across the front and back.
But here’s a lesson to learn from: don’t sew when you’re exhausted! I stayed up through the night to finish the two pairs of jeans, then took about a 3 hour nap before working on this shirt. And this is what happened:
I burst out laughing when I realized that I had sewn the two sleeves together and had to show my Mom. It looks like toddler pants! Luckily I hadn’t serged them yet so it was an easy fix:
And who am I kidding? My only truly uninterrupted sewing time is at night, so it’s not like I can safely say “Never again.”
These little ties have narrow hems. Unfortunately, of the 8 sides, I was only really truly happy with one. But fortunately, you can’t really tell once they are tied! Still, I might go back and try to do them better at some point.
This shirt stays in place much better than my other blue one. Maybe it’s because it’s not so fitted, but even when I move around the sleeves stay mostly in place.
This is another example of me being able to match the fun trends that I like for mere pennies. Both the jeans and shirt fabric came from my Grandma’s Stash, and so I really only bought the notions and the pattern (on sale, of course). This makes both myself and Mike happy!
Even the adorable Reese Witherspoon is wearing one!
